When Death Occurs

The death of a loved one is one of life's most difficult experiences. Knowing what to do in the immediate aftermath can help you navigate this challenging time with greater clarity and confidence. Our team is here to guide you every step of the way.

If Death Occurs at Home

If your loved one passes away at home, follow these steps:

1. Call 911 or your family doctor. A physician must certify the death before the body can be moved.
2. Once the death has been certified, contact a funeral home. We are available 24 hours a day at (613) 386-7373.
3. Notify close family members and friends.
4. Locate important documents such as the will, insurance policies, and any pre-arranged funeral plans.

If Death Occurs in a Hospital or Care Facility

If your loved one passes away in a hospital, nursing home, or other care facility, the staff there will guide you through the immediate steps. They will notify the appropriate medical personnel and help you understand the next steps. When you are ready, contact a funeral home to begin making arrangements.

If Death Occurs Away from Home

If your loved one passes away in another city, province, or country, contact us as soon as possible. We can coordinate the transfer of your loved one back home and handle all the necessary documentation and logistics.

What to Bring When You Meet with Us

When you come to meet with us to make arrangements, it is helpful to bring:

• The deceased's full legal name, address, and date of birth
• Social Insurance Number
• Any pre-arranged funeral plans
• Insurance policies
• A recent photograph for the obituary
• Clothing for the deceased (if applicable)
• Cemetery deed or plot information (if applicable)
