Obituary of Brian Bonsall

Please share a memory of Brian to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Dearest friends of Brian Bonsall, our family is grieving his passing on January 18, 2023, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer at the age of 81. Loved for 69 years by his wife Carol Ann Bonsall. Cherished by his children; Paul (Lee), Susan, David (Lynn) and Adam (Jody), and adored by his grandchildren Colin Bonsall (Kelsey), Claire Mumford (Hayden), Timothy Bonsall (Taylor), Adam Bonsall (Katie) and Sierra Bonsall (Joseph).

In 1965, Brian and Carol bravely emigrated from England to Canada with 2 small children in tow. They worked hard, made new friends and created a new life and legacy. Two more children were born, and the Bonsall clan was complete. As an import auto mechanic, Brian found no shortage of work at numerous garages around Kingston during his career. When he retired, he enjoyed time at the cottage on Bobs Lake, travelling the East Coast, doing puzzles of all kinds, and especially loved being with his grandchildren. Whatever his grandchildren were doing, ‘Poppy’ was there to celebrate them. He was certainly proud of who they have become as adults. His regret was not being able to meet his great grandchildren, expected in March and May 2023.

Our eternal thanks to the Palliative care team. We simply couldn’t have done the care without you! Special gratitude to Dr. Kondor who moved mountains for us, and Wendy B. who was our nursing angel. You are all very special people! As per Brian’s wishes, a private family gathering has occurred. In his memory, we simply ask you to raise a glass, for his life well lived. Alternately, a donation to Hospice Kingston would be appreciated and appropriate. We will plan a celebration of his life in the Spring. Arrangements entrusted to Payne Funeral Home, 178 Main St., Odessa, Ontario K0H 2H0.

“Grief is the last act of love we have to give to those we loved.

Where there is deep grief, there was great love.”

Very sad to hear of Brian's passing and offer our sincere condolences to Carol and family. I have happy memories of cycling to Brian and Carol's house in Longsight when I was 11-12 years old and Paul and Suzie were babies. I looked up to Brian and he and Carol always made me feel welcome when I was probably a pain at that age. I was very sad when they left for Canada and vowed to do the same later, but it did not happen and therefore was determined to visit them. Brian gave me a parting gift of his Claude Butler lightweight cycle which I was really grateful for I eventually managed to get there with my wife Helen and son Matthew in 1996 and it was great to find that Brian and Carol were the same loving couple with their family and made us very welcome. Brian kindly fixed up a car for us to go to Ottowa for a trip to celebrate our Silver Wedding. We also visited again in 1998 and had another lovely time. R.I.P. Brian you will be greatly missed. Helen, Philip and Matthew Bradley

When we bought our cottage on Buck Bay in 2001 we were immediately welcomed by Brian and Carole. They supported us through the ins and outs of cottage life in Canada. Thank you for the friendship, meals, trips and laughter - not to mention the beer. We will miss you, Brian. Mo and Mike.
