Obituary of Deb Thompson (Hanna)

Please share a memory of Deb to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with tremendous sadness the family of Debra Colleen Thompson announce her passing at the Lennox and Addington County General Hospital surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, November 24, 2022, in her 70th year. Loving and devoted wife of Miles Thompson for 52 years. Proud and cherished mother of Ken, Jackie, Jeff (Julie) and Kim (Rick). Extremely proud grandmother of Kendra, Katie, Daniel, Taylor (Isaac), Emily, Matthew and Hailey. Dear sister of Grant Hanna (Shawn), Phil Hanna (Carol Anne), Judy Joyce (Jerry), Susan Baker (Hughie), Gwen England (late Rick) and Robin Asselstine (Dave). Predeceased by her parents Audrey and Kenneth Hanna. Also lovingly remembered by her sister-in-law Betty Wales (late Robert), many nieces and nephews and their families, many dear friends, and the community.

Deb was not only a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, she was an amazing woman who volunteered endlessly and dedicated her time to the community. An Educational Assistant by day, a Politician by night. She served Stone Mills Township and L&A County well. She was the Township’s first female Reeve and a Councillor for many years. She was always on the go, thinking of new ideas and events that would support others and the community. She was also a dedicated member of the Tamworth and District Lions Club, a proud member and organizer for Centreville United Church and the Centreville Agricultural Society. Deb also loved children and could often be found at different sporting events cheering on the local team. It did not matter the time of day or the time of year, she was always thinking of things to do and ways to help others. She was a true example of selflessness and dedication. The family would like to especially thank the staff at L&A Hospital for all their care and patience. You will be greatly missed and forever loved Mom, Grandma Debbie, Deb.

The family will receive friends at Payne Funeral Home, 178 Main St., Odessa, Ontario K0H 2H0 (613-386-7373) on Sunday, November 27th from 12:30 – 4:30 pm. Funeral Service will be held at Newburgh United Church on Monday, November 28th at 11:30 am. Interment to follow at Thompson-Vrooman Cemetery in Centreville. For those desiring, memorial donations to Centreville United Church or the Stone Mills Youth Grant (Fred Wemp Memorial) would be appreciated. Please share your memories and condolences to the family at www.paynefuneralhome.com

My ❤️ aches for the entire family in the loss of Deb who was such an awesome woman. I'll forever remember her welcoming our family to the "Centreville Community" in 1989 when we owned the store there. Her smile and spirit was infectious, especially watching the boys play hockey, the best cheerleader. I always loved driving by her house at this time of year, it was always decorated inside and out for Christmas. I think the sweetest memory was watching her and Miles dance, man could they sweep across a dance floor. Deb also came to visit me when my son Thomas was born, and said he looked like his grampa Stew. She truly was a pillar of the community, loved her family fiercely and will be forever remembered in so many hearts. Be at rest and peace now Deb. God Bless your family during this difficult time

I will never forget the sleepovers that Kendra and I had at Grandma Deb's. I bottle fed a goat for the first time, we went to the Napanee fair and watched the horse show, and shared laughs. We always drove her nuts but I know she loved us regardless. I hope you are resting peacefully Deb. We all love you and will miss you dearly.

Deb and her mother, Audrey, were two of the first people that l met when l began teaching at Centreville School. Their friendly and helpful ways were a tremendous resource - especially when l began teaching in the kindergarten. To the Thompson children, l send my deepest sympathy. You have been most fortunate to have been raised in such a generous and caring home. You had one of the best examples to teach you the value of a home and community work ethic. My best wishes to you all.

Then she became an Educational Assistant in the elementary system and we met again. Debbie was a much admired politician, continuously serving others and making a great contribution to her community. Deb has been a fixture in the community for so many years that it’s hard to imagine being without her. She was a mainstay of minor hockey in championship years. And later as Reeve/Councillor always had a kind word to share even when she was unwell. To Myles & the rest of her family we send our heartfelt sympathy on losing her…she will be missed.

My family has been proud to call the Thomson family friends for many years, and we are thinking of them right now as they deal with this difficult loss.. Deb and I worked together on community projects over the years, and I enjoyed every minute I had with her. Deb was such a dedicated community person, her commitment was pure inspiration, I don't think she ever stopped thinking about ways to bring us all together in one way or another. She was especially supportive of my recent efforts to become a Stone Mills Councilor, and her advice, pep talks and uplifting texts were very helpful during a busy and stressful campaign. Thanks for having my back Deb, it made a real difference, it really did. On election night I gave her a big hug after the results came in... but had I known it was the last time I'd see her, I suppose I would have hugged her longer. When I heard she was back in hospital I gave it a few days before I reached out by text. I knew they would need to get her settled and I didnt want to take any of her strength. Me "How are you feeling Deb?" Deb "Still in hospital, feeling rough" Me "Yes I heard there was an ambulance at the house but I didn't want to pry" Deb "Been sworn in yet?" Me "Not yet, Monday at 5pm" Deb "My favorite meeting" Deb "Take pictures" That was the last I heard from her. Deb, I took the pictures and sent them to you. I hope maybe you got to see them Thanks Deb. For everything.
